Pset comments: Easy. All the solutions are in the book, so you can check your answers.
Lab comments: Sometimes the matlab labs could be tedious, but they were okay.
Readings comments: The textbook was okay for the occasional reference, but overall not worth the $130 to buy it.
Quiz comments: Exams were very reasonable.
Grading comments: I'm not sure how the course will be graded. That was never made very clear. I hope I get an A.

Prep hours: 4.0
Prereqs: Basic Matlab, vector calculus
Diff rating: 2.0
Overall rating: 4.0
Subject info: The problem sets provide insightful practical applications of theory but were not generally as difficult or lengthy as expected.
Hot: No final, short problem sets, short project
Or not:
Motivation: Provides a basic introduction to wave guides, transmission lines and antennae.
Pset comments: Generally short and included a Matlab project related question. Did not collaberate but similar questions with worked answers were available on the course website.
Lab comments: Matlab project was not long, was interesting to design and model an antenna and put theory to use, it did not help much in learning material.
Readings comments: Textbook and online notes (with many worked examples) were useful for learning material.
Quiz comments: Quizzes were fairly straightforward and well designed to asses understanding of the fundamentals without going into too much detail. Important to go to lectures just before quizzes as some quiz questions are given and worked through.
Grading comments: heavily weighted on problem sets. generally very lenient with marking.

Subject info: Amazing class, amazing Lectures, Professor Kong is king.
Hot: Professor Kong is king! Lectures!
Or not: Textbook.
Motivation: Course 6 header, if I took it again, it would be for Kong.
Pset comments: VERY VERY HELPFUL, do the PSETS!
Lab comments: Labs were in matlab and a big waste of time. Did not teach anything and students get hung up on Matlab code errors when they should spend their time learning.
Readings comments: Textbook has a lot of proofs, but he posts the book online. Textbook not helpful.
Quiz comments: Exams were very fair. Kong is VERY helpful, no supreises.
Grading comments: Fair grading. Slightly harsh on psets.

Prereqs: 6.002 and 8.02, Matlab programming experience
Diff rating: 4.0
Overall rating: 6.0
Subject info: Electromagnetic wave theory, antenna, and Maxwell's equations. Good balance between application and theory. Matlab programming assignments were interesting, but the handouts were a little confusing.
Hot: 2 1-hour quizzes, NO FINAL! Project Homework Assignments Kong and his stories about Maxwell
Or not: Recitations -- Cover material that is simply not needed. Long derivations and topics covered that are never covered in problem sets, lectures, tests, or projects.
Motivation: Header class for course 6. All those interested in electrical engineering should take this class.
Pset comments: Good problem sets. Covered the material, and didn't take too long to do. No collaboration needed. Any help could be obtained during interactive office hours held twice a week.
Lab comments: Design project (matlab programming assignment), was good and interesting. Could have used a little introduction to matlab as a review at the start of the course.
Readings comments: Textbook is good and follows material taught in class.
Quiz comments: Good. Perhaps a bit too easy. Grade averages were high, and test problems made it difficult to show that you really had an understanding of the material. Mid 70's average tests are preferred to high 80's.
Grading comments: Very fair.
Suggestions: Keep professor kong!

Motivation: It's like 8.03 but relevant to course 6. You get to answer questions with "zero", "one", or "infinity" when the lecturer or recitation instructor asks the class.
Pset comments: Kind of useful; material did not seem to correlate in time with lectures, necessarily, though.
Lab comments: MATLAB MATLAB MATLAB!
Readings comments: The textbook is missing much material, which is fortunately posted on the website.
Quiz comments: You have to understand the concepts; you don't actually need much math on the exams.
Grading comments:

Overall rating: 5.0
Subject info: good balance. should have less algebra - and more concepts!
Hot: Professor Kong's stories about Maxwell. Tests are not that bad. P-sets are short.
Or not: Confusing, sometimes. Need to do more practice questions, less talk, more problems. Overwhelming amount of new things learned. Design project took awhile and was ambiguous.
Motivation: Required.
Pset comments: Short, but hard to get answers for. Go to interactive session for help.
Lab comments: Labs and design projects were challenging. It was hard to know if you were doing the right thing or not. Not too long though.
Readings comments: Textbook did not cover enough, and was a little bit confusing. It was lucky that p-sets were based off the book and problems done in class.
Quiz comments: Reasonable. Be careful not to make stupid mistakes on p-sets - you will be penalized A LOT for it.
Grading comments: Not sure of the grading policy yet.

Motivation: EE Header
Pset comments: Most psets involved searching through the textbook for applicable equations rather than using knowledge from lectures.
Lab comments: MATLAB projects were a pain and seemed irrelevant. They were more an exercise in MATLAB than course material.
Readings comments: Supplementary readings online were very helpful for psets.

Diff rating: 5.0
Overall rating: 6.0
Subject info: The content dealt with learning basic E&M applications and wave theory. The class met what I expected. There was a good balance between application and theory, but it was weighed more towards theory.
Hot: The Maxwell Stories during class
Or not: The Matlab programming assignments
Motivation: I am interested in the subject matter and I need it to graduate. Someone else should take the class because it is well taught and Prof. Kong is amazing. For others who will take the course, make sure that you can work in Matlab.
Pset comments: They were very useful and directly tied to what we were learning in class.
Lab comments: The labs and design projects were broken down piece by piece and used to slowly build up a FD-TD. They were very reasonable in length since it was broken up for the whole term.
Readings comments: The textbook was useful, there weren't any class notes.
Quiz comments: The exams were very good. They were very conceptal and made sure that we understood the basics of what was going on. You just needed to understand the main concepts, they weren't out to trick you on something silly. The exams were about the same difficulty as the psets.
Grading comments: The grading policy was extremely fair.
Suggestions: Maybe not have the course so centered around programming assignments.

Hot: MIMs
Or not: You
Motivation: I wanted to gain some intuition as to the physical characteristics of electronic components and EM waves.
Pset comments: The problem sets are a little challenging, especially because of the Matlab assignments.
Lab comments: Design project is not much harder than the homework Matlab assignments because of the TA's helpful code.
Readings comments: Textbook written by the professor, pretty useful.

Or not: No formula sheets on tests. Recitation going over unimportant concepts.
Motivation: Wanted to understand more EE type stuff.
Pset comments: Problem sets are standard MIT - a lot of time to complete, but prepare well for quizs.
Lab comments: Design projects were easy, though a small portion of the grade for the amount of work.
Readings comments: Textbook was somewhat useful, though it didn't go over every concept.
Quiz comments: No formula sheets for exams - WTF? Quiz matter was okay. Would have strongly preferred a formula sheet.

Prereqs: some MATLAB familiarity, basic 8.02
Diff rating: 2.0
Overall rating: 4.0
Subject info: you learn a good breadth of material about EM waves. however, I don't think any students really gained an intuition for the material because we just regurgitated certain examples for tests.
Hot: fair grading easy tests
Or not: not understanding lectures
Motivation: I took it because it is an EE header.
Pset comments: not useful, the answers were all online already anyway and I frequently referenced them. The material did not relate well to exams.
Lab comments: The one project near the end of the term was just a MATLAB exercise, which, can be a debugging nightmare. The project didn't help learn the material at all.
Readings comments: The textbook goes into way more depth than what is required for the class. Consequently, it was only helpful to reference specific topics.
Quiz comments: we just regurgitated the material for quizzes. not a very thorough understanding was necessary.
Grading comments: grading was very fair and lenient.
Suggestions: This was my first class that was taught by an entirely foreign faculty. My lecturer, recitation instructor and tutorial instructor were all chinese and had accents. I had a difficult time understanding their english. I suggest that a more diverse faculty in the future would make students feel more comfortable.
