Prereqs: 8.02-type material is helpful. vector calculus is extremely useful. familiarity with complex analysis a plus.
Diff rating: 5.0
Overall rating: 6.0
Subject info: We learned about a variety of electromagnetic phenomena, with a good balance of mathematical derivations and physical demonstrations. Both the derivations and demonstrations are very satisfying.
Hot: Kong's stories. Dielectric fish and other neat demonstrations.
Or not: OH MY GOD THERE IS SO MUCH MATH
Motivation: Interest. If E&M does not excite you already, perhaps this course could help. :)
Pset comments: Psets were very helpful in learning the material. I did not collaborate (except for the first pset) and I did not use a bible.
Lab comments: There are none.
Readings comments: The textbook, by Prof. Kong, is reasonably clear and well-written. However, some terminology which appeared in psets seemed to be missing from the book (ie. "loss tangent"), making homework rather more annoying than necessary.
Quiz comments: I found that the quizzes were quite good at measuring understanding of the course. The quizzes were comparable to the psets, and a good understanding of homework was helpful in doing well on the quizzes.
Grading comments: The grading policy is very lenient. I think it was quite fair.
Suggestions: nope
Objectives: There was no clear set of objectives and outcomes, but I'm pretty satisfied with the results in any case.

Prereqs: 18.01, 18.02, 8.02, 6.013 is helpful. The class does a good job of starting from 1st principles and should be approachable by anyone with a strong math background.
Diff rating: 4.0
Overall rating: 6.0
Subject info: Maxwell's equations, transmission lines, antenna patterns, and wave propogation. That pretty much sums up this class. It is taught from a theoretical perspective but examples of real world applications are given and some demos are performed.
Hot: Maxwell's equations (Jin Au Kong and his stories).
Or not: The inside of a top round steak that is more than 17mm thick in a microwave that is operating at 2.5GHz.
Motivation: I took this class to gain a general familiarity with waveguides and antennas. I think this class did a good job of fullfilling my interests.
Pset comments: The problem sets are good. Most of the answers are in the book which gives you the opportunity to see that you are thinking about and approaching the problems correctly. I worked alone and did not use a bible.
Lab comments: There are none.
Readings comments: The textbook has some interesting typos, particularly in the examples, other than that it is a useful book that takes a more "problems" oriented approach to E&M.
Quiz comments: The exams track the homework well and shouldn't be too demanding.
Grading comments: The grading policy puts more emphasis on psets than the typical class at MIT, but I think this is good because it encourages students to spend more time on them which is ultimately the best preparation for the final.
Suggestions:
Objectives: His stated mission was to teach us "to think and if we learn a little bit about E&M that is good too." I think Professor Kong did an excellent job of emphasizing alternative approaches to classic problems

Prereqs: I would say that you need the following: 1) Exposure to multivariable calculus and differential equations. You don't need to have taken E&M before but having taken other E&M classes before 6.630 helps you appreciate how awesome 6.630 is (or conversely, how most E&M classes simply suck compared to 6.630).
Diff rating: 2.0
Overall rating: 7.0
Subject info: This subject has the following strong points 1) The fact that Kong derives everything on the board. I have gotten an amazing amount of insight about how transmission line equations can be derived directly from Maxwell Equations, how Fourier analysis can be used to describe antenna patterns, etc. 2) Kong's stories about Maxwell. I feel that these stories are very important about knowing what is special about EE 3) Kong's fashion sense.
Hot: King Kong. King Kong. King Kong. I loved his lectures and his stories. His flamboyance does not hurt either.
Or not:
Motivation: I would tell all my friends to not miss a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a class with Jin (King) Kong. There are very few instructors who have such a strong grasp of their subject matter. More importantly, no one in this elite group of professors can hold a candle to Kong in terms of charisma. I would tell my undergrad friends to ditch classes like 6.007 and 6.013 and to take 6.630 instead. Why go through the torture of taking a class from Staelin when you can take a class from Kong?
Pset comments:
Lab comments:
Readings comments: The textbook is not very organized but it is pretty good.
